chemicals in the food

Many of the foods that we eat look safe, like there’s nothing to worry about when we make it because it’s approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But what consumers don’t know is that some of these chemicals put into our food or that’s sprayed on our fruits and vegetables when they are growing can cause illnesses that sometimes can’t be cured by antibiotics. These chemicals can also have adverse effects on the human body and might be the main reason as to why we are going through our normal changes at an early age.
Consumers in today's society are being fed food that looks pretty. Food that has a lot of flavor in it, food that’s ultimately not real. Real in the sense that it’s not as nutritional as it was back in the days of actual farming and when people weren’t so fat or had all these health issues floating around now. These additives or chemicals can pose different health risk on a person, some might cause cancer or some might even cause them to be obese.  For example sugar additives especially in diet sodas can cause the consumer to gain weight, which it’s not primarily intended to but it just does.
Some of the chemicals that are also being put in our food are High Fructose Corn Syrup, which is found in almost everything we consume. This type of chemical can make the consumers blood pressure to rise and can lead to heart disease. In the article “Chemicals found in everyday food cause cancer, wild hormonal shifts” it says that these Dutch researchers have found that man made milk, bread and butter can build up in the body and harm it. They even state that low doses of the chemicals in the food, over time can accumulate and have an effect inside and the consumer is left with serious medical problems. Natural Health advocate Mike Adams stated that “certain chemicals in foods have already started causing problems for humans and environment,” he also states that due to the chemicals in food girls are going through puberty at ages such as thirteen or even younger.
Growth hormones in meat and milk can cause girls to start going through puberty as early as seven years old that are growing breast tissue and getting their periods all thanks to the chemical in the meat. These growths on a girl can lead to social and physical problems. For example girl that’s eight years old with breast make them look older than what they are and can also make them feel as if they don’t fit in with the rest. This growth hormone in the meat/milk  is also a contributor to the high rate of child/adult obesity in the US.
`           Ashley Armstrong  a what seems to be normal five year old, she dances and plays softball and is learning to play guitar has kidney disease and needs a few transplants. Her kidney failure can even prevent her from having children when she is older. The disease she has isn’t hereditary; she caught it from when her mom gave her spinach for dinner that had E. Coli in it. A study in the Pew Charitable Trusts Produce Safety Project found that food borne illnesses such as E. Coli and Salmonella and other pathogens alike are on the rise and have been linked to getting 76 million people sick and about 5,000 people dying yearly.
Even low dosage of hormones and antibiotics can pose a threat to the consumers even though the FDA and USDA claimed it wouldn’t. These low dosage hormones and antibiotics that’s  fed to the cows have adverse effects on a fetus and younger children. David Wallinga says that “it’s not the size of the dose, but the fact that there’s any exposure at the wrong time.” He says this because if the body is still in the process of growing and going through changes these synthetic hormones as it’s called can create complications and be a major factor in prostate and breast cancer, early onset puberty and infertility.

prospectus

what my research paper will be about is on how chemicals are being put into our food to better the taste rather than better the health part. i will discuss what chemicals are being put into the food and what advantages/disadvantages it may cause on the consumers. Also on how because of the chemicals a lot of the natural nutrients isnt found as much in food now.

a couple questions that might arise in this paper:
what chemicals exactly are being put into the food?why would the companies care more about the taste instead of the health aspect?

where i will get my research:
from the two books we are reading in this class and our environmental ethics class, also on the internet fidning out what our food is being processed by and food labels. also interviews online as well on why chemicals are more of a prominent factor in out food than the actual nutrients

My Mcdonald's Ride

So it's around 10pm and I'm at the park with a few friends still playing handball and just hanging out talking about random topics. My friend suggest we go to McDonald's because she's been craving and seeing commercials all day long so to her it was a sign. Knowing I don't go in there because nothing on the menu is for me, but since I am her ride I might as well go. All of us get into my car and head down to the McDonald's on 188st and Hillside I pull up to the drive through and they order. My friend gets the #13 which is the nuggets and fries with a sprite no ice because we both know that there is more ice in the cup than actual soda. And my other friends get the same or a big mac with cokes or the nothing but sugar filled sweet tea. They pay and we leave and go to one of the guys house by that's 5minutes driving away from McD's. Not even one minute into the ride and my car smells like nuggets, fries and burgers, the fries I didn't mind the smell of them. The nuggets were not a big issue but the beef it had an awful stench to it I can't describe but it smelled old and dead. It was a horrible ride to this persons house after they started eating, I had atleast 2 headaches from the stench alone, but my friends enjoyed what they were eating even if it killing me. We reached the house and I was happy to smell fresh air instead of that stuff.Never again will I have that in my car or even be around it.

to eat chicken or not to eat chicken that is the question

So I went to my doctors office earlier today and she told me that I should keep going with my diet but that to add chicken in the mix. I looked at her like she was crazy because i haven't had chicken in almost 4 years so I honestly don't know how it taste anymore since all I ever eat is fish, crab, shrimp etc. My doctor and I talked more about it as well with a nutritionist and I left that place with such a headache and confused. I came home talked to my dad about it he told me that i should just go and start eating chicken because it would make him happy to see me back to my old ways but still staying true to my diet. He made me feel bad for my choices and I can't even blame my brother because he's in Miami so it's all me. What a guilt trip so now I'm confused on if I should start eating chicken and fish with no red meat? or keep with my diet? I know at the end of the day it's my choice but asking for others opinions never hurts.

Response to Chapter 1 Fast Food Nation

Chapter 1 in Fast Food Nation was different than the introduction. The chapter actually went into stating things about fast food then about a mountain that almost half the class didn't even care about.  The chapter caught my attention when it was talking about how they had witresses dress up in different outfits and serve the food to the cars instead of the people going in to eat. That reminded me when i worked at one restaurant and we had to dress up if it was halloween, valentines etc. also standing up taking orders and serving food almost everyday for crazy hours in the day/night. Then it went on about how these other men came about in making the fast food places we know now so big and popular, with the hiring of male workers which in my opinion is wrong because i see some places like that still like around my area in Queens the Mexican Grill Qdoba is all male staff. Then how they went on from being a cart to a drive through to a big restaurant with flashy signs bright colors having machines to do the work and a person with no skills to just be there to serve the food or dress it up with ketchup letttuce pickles onioins anything else that goes on a burger. This chapter was really interesting to read and I don't mind reading it now to the end.

Welcome

Hello Readers,

My names Arielle Francis and I'm a Pescatarian, meaning I don't eat any type of meat I only eat fish. At age 14 I became a pescatarian from a bet my brother made with me stating that if I can go a week without eating any type of meat he would give me money. So within that week I ate nothing but fish, I almost caved but I stopped myself mid ordering at a restaurant and us ordered a salad. After the week had passed I told my brother to keep his money because after not eating meat for  that whole week I felt a great amount of energy and felt better about myself. I was less tired and I felt my body now getting adjusted to my new lifestyle, I haven't eaten meat in almost 4 years and I'm most likely going to keep going with my diet.

It is a healthy route but then again some problems can occur. Since I don't eat any type of meat I do lack in things such as iron which is what normal meat eaters obtain regularly. I have to take supplemental pills that are found wherever, CVS, Rite Aid, etc. I get my pills from the vitamin shoppe or my doctor prescribes them to me because she feels if i need more of a nutriment she can prescribe a better or higher dosage of what I need. And not everyone is going to get used to taking pills, some of them stink really bad and taste horrible but if your going to be a vegan, pescatarian, vegetarian then these are the things you have to get used to and repeat to yourself that is for a resason.

I don't shop at regular super markets I go into fish markets for my food because they have more of  what I need and a bigger variety of fish than an Associated, C-town, Walbaums etc. I don't only eat fish I also eat enough fruits and veggies to get me going through the day. I also eat a lot of carbs such as rice, bread and pasta. My parents don't cook for me anymore because to them I've become a brat about how i want my food to be cooked and to be kept away from any meat products. I  cook for myself daily, I go shop for my own groceries daily so I can get fresh fish, just because to me it taste better. And because it does come from a fish market and is fresh I can see the person who's preparing my soon to be dinner before I actually cook it, also I can tell the person to take the bones out for me.
